                              COORDINATION NUMBER

  • The  total  no.  of   monodentate  ligands  plus  double  the  number of  bidentate  ligands (if any) attached to the central atom through    copordinate  bonds iscalled coordination no.

  • In other words coordination number may be defined as the number of coordinate bonds formed with the central atom

  • In chemistry & crystallography , the coordination no. of a central  atom in a molecule or crystal is the no. of nearest neughbours

  • The coordination no. of a central atom is determined by simply counting the other atoms to which it is bonded [by single or multiple bonds]    for example:- In [Cr(NH3)2Cl2Br2]1- , Cr+3  is central atom with coordination number = 6

  • The number of ions or atoms that immediately surrounded an atom or ion of intrest is called the coordination number
